This week, we are introducing our Supervisory Gas Engineer, Joel McCartney. Joel has been at Refresh NI since the beginning – Fun fact, Joel was the first gas engineer we hired!
Joel has many years of industry experience and is well respected and passionate about his work. Joel is very versatile and carries out a range of duties at Refresh NI. Joel is a qualified engineer by trade, but he also carries out customer surveys, plumbing repairs, maintenance work, and more!
We asked Joel to tell us a bit about his career path leading up to where he is now…
”I started as a painter and decorator, but it wasn’t for me. I then joined a heating company as a trainee 12 years ago. I became fully qualified in 2012 and rose to a position as a Response Maintenance Contract Manager, where I managed response for 20k properties. I then moved to Refresh NI in April 2021, as I really liked the vision and ethos of the company.”
What do you love most about what you do?
”I love meeting different people every day and helping others.”
Tell us, you have the weekend off work, what are your plans?
”My ideal weekend would start by going down to the beach, getting into the water, and watching the sunrise. After, I would have a nice breakfast and go for a walk. In the evening, I would go out for dinner and have a couple of drinks. To finish off, I would go home and watch a movie.”
Speaking of movies… If someone made a movie about your life, what would it be titled?
”Strange little man.”
If you could swap positions with someone in Refresh NI for one day, who would it be and why?
”I would swap places with an apprentice, looking back it was great to get picked up every day and to get the chance to learn new things every day from an experienced colleague.”
Who in your opinion makes the best cup of tea/coffee in the office? Promise we won’t tell the others…
”Natalie!”
How would you describe yourself in three words?
”Small, weird, and funny.”
In your opinion, what is your best trait?
”I always try to be a positive guy.”
Looking back now, what advice would you give to your younger self?
”Do not sweat it”
When you are not working, what do you like to get up to?
”On my days off I spend time with people I love, I meditate, do yoga, go cold water swimming, ride my motorbike and spend time with nature.”
Finally, who inspires you?
”Everyone I meet inspires me – I believe you can learn from everyone, I am inspired by not just one person.”
