Homeowners living in Northern Ireland increasingly have the opportunity to realise significant savings in their mortgage costs by improving the energy efficiency of their homes.

Like many major businesses across the globe, local banks are becoming more aware of the economic, social, and environmental benefits of embracing sustainability and are rewarding those customers who own the most energy-efficient homes.  Refresh can help homeowners in a number of ways to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and realise long-term savings in their mortgage costs as well as in their energy bills.

Yesterday Danske Bank became the first bank in the UK to launch a mortgage product which is certified as carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust. Customers in Northern Ireland that take out this mortgage product will be rewarded for owning a greener home by being offered Danske’s lowest mortgage rates as well as being eligible for Cashback of up to £2,000.  First time buyers, home movers, and switchers, with a home Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) or Predicted Energy Assessment (PEA) rating of A-C, are eligible to apply for Danske Bank’s Carbon Neutral Mortgage.  Full details on Danske’s Carbon Neutral Mortgage product can be found here https://danskebank.co.uk/personal/products/mortgages/carbon-neutral-mortgages

This follows on from AIB who last year launched their “Green Mortgage” product.  This product offers homeowners with energy efficient homes access to AIB’s lowest mortgage rates – with initial fixed rates as low as 1.79% available.  The lender also announced that it will plant 10 trees in Northern Ireland for every ‘green mortgage’ that is drawn down, in partnership with ‘Trees on the land’. The AIB Green Mortgage product is open to those buying a home, or those who already have a mortgage loan with the bank and whose property has an EPC rating in the energy bands A or B, subject to criteria. AIB also offers up to £1,500 cashback on its green mortgage subject to qualifying criteria. It also comes with no application or booking fee and new customers will receive a free valuation.  Full details on Danske’s Carbon Neutral Mortgage product can be found here  https://aibni.co.uk/our-products/mortgages/green-mortgage
