Why Many Homes in Northern Ireland Still Use Oil

Northern Ireland has one of the highest levels of oil heating in the UK.

According to NISRA, 61% of households in Northern Ireland use oil as their primary heating source, compared with just 5% across the wider UK.

Historically, many rural homes relied on oil because there was limited access to the gas network. However, as infrastructure has expanded, more homeowners now have the option to switch to gas heating.

The Benefits of Switching from Oil to Gas

Switching from oil to gas offers several advantages for homeowners looking to improve the comfort and efficiency of their homes.

Modern condensing gas boilers can achieve efficiency levels of over 90%, helping convert more fuel into usable heat for your home. According to the Energy Saving Trust, replacing an inefficient boiler with a modern high-efficiency model can significantly reduce energy waste. This can help homeowners:

  • Improve heating performance
  • Reduce wasted energy
  • Lower overall heating costs

One of the biggest differences between oil and gas heating is how the fuel is delivered.

With oil heating you need space for an oil tank, you have to order oil deliveries and you can run the risk of running out of oil during colder months.

Whereas, with natural gas, your fuel is delivered directly through the mains network, no storage tank is required, and there’s no need to schedule deliveries or monitor fuel levels, making gas heating more convenient and reliable for everyday home heating (heatni.com).

Natural gas burns cleaner than heating oil and produces fewer emissions and particulates. According to the Energy Saving Trust,  Improving the efficiency of home heating systems is one of the key ways households can reduce their environmental impact.
